How does the scheme work?
The Window Scrappage Scheme is a UK-wide initiative run by window companies to help homeowners upgrade to energy-efficient windows at a discounted cost. It’s not a government-backed scheme, but a private programme aimed at improving home energy efficiency while supporting recycling efforts. By replacing your old, inefficient windows, you’ll not only improve your home’s insulation but also reduce your energy bills.
Homeowners who qualify can save up to £2,500 on the cost of installing new windows. Old windows and doors are recycled as part of the scheme, preventing unnecessary waste and promoting sustainability. The recycled materials, such as uPVC, glass, and rubber, are repurposed for new products.
For every window or door you recycle through the scheme, you can earn up to £200 off the cost of your replacements. This means the more windows and doors you upgrade, the more you save, helping to make your home more energy-efficient while cutting costs.

What happens to the old windows?
When old windows and doors are removed through the Window Scrappage Scheme, they are carefully recycled to minimise waste. The uPVC frames are processed and reused to create new window frames, door frames, and other products. The glass is crushed, cleaned, and melted down to form new glass materials, while metal components, like aluminium, are repurposed for other uses. Even the rubber seals are shredded into granules, which are often used for playground surfaces, sports tracks, and artificial turf. This recycling process ensures that old windows are given a new life instead of ending up in landfill.
